The Short Answer
Stay in Mid-Beach if you want a big oceanfront resort and don't need to walk out to bars and restaurants every night. Our pick is Fontainebleau Miami Beach at 44th Street, which has several pools, a spa, many restaurants and the LIV nightclub. Eden Roc and the Nobu Hotel next door are the calmer alternatives in the same block.
Stay in and around the Faena District, roughly 29th to 36th Streets, for design hotels and the best restaurants in Mid-Beach: Faena, The Miami Beach EDITION, The Palms and the Riu Plaza are all in this stretch, and South Beach is a short ride south. On a budget, Freehand Miami and Hotel Croydon are a short walk from the sand.
Mid-Beach's Areas Compared
| Area | Best for | Walk to | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Around the Faena District (29th–36th St) | Design hotels, restaurants, couples | Faena restaurants, beach boardwalk | Pricier; few cheap eats |
| Resort strip (36th–48th St) | Big resorts, families, pools | Hotel restaurants, the boardwalk | Little outside the hotels; LIV crowds at night |
| Indian Creek side (west of Collins) | Budget hotels, hostels | Beach in a few minutes | Not oceanfront; busy Collins crossings |
Collins Avenue is a busy road here. Oceanfront hotels have odd street numbers; anything with an even number means crossing Collins to reach the beach.

Mid-Beach or South Beach?
Choose Mid-Beach for bigger pools, more space on the sand and quieter nights, and for families who will spend most of the day at the hotel. Choose South Beach if you want to walk to dinner, bars and the Art Deco streets. The two are 5–15 minutes apart by car, and the free trolley links them.
The big resorts here usually add a daily resort fee and charge for valet parking, so compare the total price. Fontainebleau and The Miami Beach EDITION both have nightclubs on site; ask for a room away from them if you want quiet.
Getting Around Mid-Beach
- Free trolley: the Miami Beach Trolley's Middle Beach Loop and Collins Express run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., about every 20 minutes on average, and connect with the South Beach Loop.
- On foot: the beach boardwalk runs behind many of the oceanfront hotels, which is the pleasant way to walk between them. Collins Avenue itself is busy and not much fun to walk.
- From the airport: 25–40 minutes by car without traffic. The Route 150 Miami Beach Airport Express bus from the MIA Metrorail station stops on 41st Street.
- To Brickell and Downtown: 15–25 minutes by car. PortMiami is 15–25 minutes away.
