The Short Answer
Stay on or near Collins Avenue between about 15th and 23rd Streets, around Lincoln Road and Collins Park, or at the north end of Ocean Drive. You get oceanfront hotels, an easy walk to Lincoln Road and Española Way, and some distance from the loudest bars. Our pick is The Betsy, at Ocean Drive and 14th Street.
Stay in South of Fifth (SoFi) for the quietest, most upscale corner, with South Pointe Park and good restaurants, but expect a 2 km walk to Lincoln Road. Stay on Ocean Drive between 5th and 14th Streets only if you want to be in the middle of the Art Deco nightlife; bars there play loud music late. Stay on Washington Avenue or near Flamingo Park for lower prices, two to four blocks from the sand.
South Beach's Areas Compared
| Area | Best for | To the beach | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| South of Fifth | Quiet, upscale, South Pointe Park | Short walk | Few budget hotels; far from Lincoln Road |
| Ocean Drive (5th–14th St) | Art Deco, people-watching, bars | Across Lummus Park | Loud music late, crowds |
| Collins Ave & Lincoln Road (15th–23rd St) | Oceanfront hotels, shopping, Española Way | On the sand or across the street | Pricier; busy Lincoln Road |
| Washington Ave & Flamingo Park | Lower prices, local restaurants | 2–4 blocks | Busy streets at night; plainer hotels |
On Collins Avenue, hotels with odd street numbers are on the ocean side; even numbers are across the street from the beach.

Noise, Fees and Beach Safety
- Noise: the stretch of Ocean Drive from about 5th to 14th Street, and parts of Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue, have bars and clubs that stay loud late, especially on weekends. Light sleepers should pick South of Fifth, Collins Park or a room away from the street.
- Fees: many South Beach hotels add a daily resort fee and charge for valet parking. City garages and lots take the ParkMobile and PayByPhone apps.
- Beach flags: lifeguard towers fly warning flags. Green means low hazard, yellow means moderate surf or currents, red means high surf or strong currents, a red flag with a crossed-out swimmer means the water is closed, and purple means dangerous marine life. Swim near a staffed lifeguard tower.
- March: spring break brings big crowds, and the City of Miami Beach treats March as a high-impact period. In March 2026 it applied extra measures from Thursday to Sunday in the Art Deco District: high flat-rate parking at the city garages, Ocean Drive beach entrances limited to a few streets with security checkpoints for coolers, glass, tents and similar items, restricted access to Ocean Drive on the busiest weekends, and free 24-hour shuttles from outlying garages. The measures change from year to year, so check the city's website before you book a March stay.
Getting Around South Beach
- On foot: South Beach is flat and walkable. South Pointe to Lincoln Road is about 3 km.
- Free trolley: the Miami Beach Trolley's South Beach Loop runs from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., about every 20 minutes on average, and the Collins Express and Middle Beach Loop continue north to Mid-Beach.
- From the airport: 25–40 minutes by car without traffic, or take the Route 150 Miami Beach Airport Express bus from the MIA Metrorail station to Collins Avenue, Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue.
- To Brickell and Downtown: 15–25 minutes by car across the causeways. PortMiami is 10–20 minutes away.
