The Short Answer
Stay up here for a quiet beach, more space and longer stays, not for nightlife. Our pick is The Carillon Miami Wellness Resort in North Beach, where every unit is a one- or two-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, and the spa and wellness area covers 70,000 square feet.
For a splurge, the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Surfside is the standout. Families who want room to spread out should look at the all-suite Grand Beach Hotel Surfside, a short walk from Bal Harbour Shops. Budget hotels are scarce up here; the nearest in this guide is the beachfront Ramada Plaza Marco Polo, a short drive north in Sunny Isles Beach.
North Beach, Surfside and Bal Harbour Compared

| Surfside | Families, all-suite hotels | Small residential town | Little nightlife |
| Bal Harbour | Luxury shopping, beach hotels | Upscale and calm | Expensive; far from South Beach |

Is It Too Far North?
For a beach holiday, no: the sand is wide and much less crowded than in South Beach, and Surfside and Bal Harbour feel like small towns. But you will drive or take rides for most evenings out. South Beach is 20–30 minutes away by car, and Brickell and Downtown are farther. If you want to walk out to restaurants every night, Mid-Beach or South Beach suit you better.
Most hotels here add a daily resort fee, and several have valet parking only; Grand Beach Hotel Surfside charges both, so compare total prices. In Bal Harbour itself, The Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour is closed for renovation and plans to reopen in February 2027.
Getting to North Beach, Surfside and Bal Harbour
- From Miami International Airport (MIA): 35–50 minutes by car without traffic.
- From Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL): 30–45 minutes to Bal Harbour by car, often the quicker option for Surfside and Bal Harbour.
- Within Miami Beach: the free Miami Beach Trolley's North Beach Loop and Collins Express run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., about every 20 minutes on average. Surfside and Bal Harbour are separate towns, so check how far north the routes go before relying on them.
- To Sunny Isles Beach: a short drive north past Haulover Park.
